Plate Coral
Sunflower Coral ~ Disk Coral ~ Mushroom Coral

Picture of a Plate Coral
Heliofungia actiniformis

On the reef these corals inhabit shallow areas in calm lagoons on sandy or muddy bottoms. They are absolutely beautiful and are often mistaken for anemones.

Plate Coral
Large Polyp Stony Corals Index

Description:
This coral is usually brown with white tips sometimes it is bright green. Pink tips and solid pink tentacles are also common.

Lighting - Water flow:
Low water movement is required. It requires medium to strong light.

Difficulty of Care:
This coral somewhat delicate and hard to care for. Usually they do fine for some time and then suddenly die for no apparent reason. They are readily available so beginners often pick them up although they should be kept only by experienced reef keepers.

Aggressiveness:
This coral sends out sweeper tentacles and so should be given a good 6 inches of clearance all around. They will also move about the substrate (like fungia) and so may need to be "boxed in" with rock formations.

Latest Comments

I would not say that this LPS is difficult to care for, nor is it best left to experienced reef keepers. They also do quite well in moderate water flow areas due to increased gas exchange and will readily take prepared foods if supplied.

Some of the coolest comments:
If your plate coral looks very unhappy, like it has retracted into it's skeleton, you probably have a low level of calcium. mine did- i went and bought Kent Marine liquid calcium and it was alot better the other day. If you think part of it has died, use an eye dropper and squit some kent marine concentrated iodine over the area and the coral should recover! Katherine lompoc, Ca
